A Nice Weekend in Review: 5.7.06 -- Sunday

Corner Bistro
Bistro burger
Fries
Diet coke

I have been eager to try this place for awhile, since it is usually regarded as the best burger in New York. Our experience there was less than perfect. First of all, it's a pretty cool place. A legitimate divey burger bar -- unlike Burger Joint it doesn't feel contrived and isn't in a huge marble lobby of a nice hotel. We walked in and, seeing no waiter or host and an empty table, we sat down. This was a huge mistake. Apparently, the waiter felt like we undercut his authority or something but seating ourselves and was incredibly curt to us. Our food arrived very quickly, but the burgers were all over cooked, which ruined any chance of telling if they were really that good. The meat seemed flavorful I guess, but just couldn't be compared to a medium rare burger. We also couldn't complain because the guy would have had a melt down and probably screamed at us and slammed our burgers against the windows. Also, the "Bistro burger" is a burger with bacon and cheese. A little presumptious to name this burger I think. I continue to confirm that Bartley's is really awesome.

Sobe "Liz Blizz" drink -- This tastes like coconut.

Ouest
Pinot Noir
Mushroom croquettes with greens, goat cheese fondue (I think this is what they called it, it was basically a sauce made from goat cheese), mustard oil -- Good.
Roasted rack of lamb with roasted garlic and rosemary lamb sausage, cauliflower puree, cauliflower -- This was pretty decent, but it wasn't the best I've had here. Also, I was sort of not hungry enough.
Dense chocolate cake
Earl Grey

Jack's Courtyard
2 sips cosmopolitan -- I don't want to drink this again, but this was a very pleasant evening activity.

Whenever I've had a Bistro Burger, they've always been pretty medium rare, which is weird, since I prefer medium to medium well. My issue with the Bistro Burger was always that it is so enormous and fatty and not too cooked, that the bottom bun always dissolves from grease before I can finish eating and then my hands are covered in grease.

The cosmopolitans were a consequence of the fact that a woman who used to live with us left behind a bottle of premade cosmopolitan mix. If you're wondering, "Gee, Jack, was this the kind of thing that you buy from Gracefully for eleven dollars even though it's only a one liter bottle of heavily processed juice and water?" the answer is yes. Still, it was essentially palatable.

I had some great times at Corner Bistro, mainly because I liked its college-y atmosphere. Can't recall whether the food was good. I think so.
