FoodReader's Nook

FoodBrother my brother Mike sent me a question he thought we might have answers to:

Dear FoodReporters,
We all know that beets and asparagus, besides being delicious, do funny things to one's body chemistry. We also know that carrots are good for one's eyes. What are some less well known food-body interactions?

Off the top of my head, I can think of two obvious ones that fit this category: limes prevent scurvy and beans make you farty. You guys got any better ones?

Also, tell Mike - Mike, are you out there? - tell Mike that you are what you eat.

Here is one that is widely known: turkey (due to tryptophan) makes you sleepy.

Something that may be slightly less well known is that tryptophan is an essential amino acid and a precursor to producing seratonin. Apparently there have been cases where a lack of tryptophan in people's diet has limited seratonin production and made them depressed. So eat turkey, it makes you happy.

The roots of some potato plant in the Alaskan bush causes you to not be able to survive if you are not eating enough. It is a kind of poison. This is not such a severe problem if you are with friends.
