Germany and Italy!

3/15/06

Breakfast:
Ham and cheese on an English muffin.
Capresso cappuccino
Orange juice.

Lunch:
Sampling from Greek spread at AD. Good tender chicken, salad, crappy Greek lasagna.

Cocktail Hour:
4 Dewar's and sodas, at Callander's.

Lowenbrau Keller:
2 German Chocolate Cakes
1 Spaten beer.

I went with some FoodFriends associates to Lowenbrau Keller. LA area FoodFriends would do well to go to this place. It's around 3211 Beverly. Why a German restaurant is in the heart of Koreatown is one of about a dozen mysteries of Lowenbrau Keller. The place is ornately decorated in Bavarian style, with a layer of Liberace-style garish chandaliers and such on top. There were about four parties eating. The German hostess was old and scary. When asked about a table for six, she looked saddened, and explained in accented English that the waitress "had a concussion" and could barely handle the folks she had already. Indeed, the waitress, another old Teutonic matron, had two black eyes and appeared weak and confused. So we were turned away from eating. At the bar, I requested the house special cocktail, and was given a "German chocolate cake." I do not know the ingredients. But when one sucks on a lemon, and then takes a sip, the effect in the mouth is remarkably similar to the taste of thick cake. FOODFRIENDS: WOULD ANYONE LIKE TO SPECULATE ON THE INGREDIENTS?

On to The Old Spaghetti Factory:
House salad with Italian dressing
Spaghetti with Rich Meat Sauce
House white wine, 3 glasses
Vanilla ice cream

FoodFriends associates MLo and Laura seemed to appreciate this place on some level of irony that I wasn't getting, which was odd, because normally in a given party I am the person who is most forgiving of chain restaurants. The architecture was indeed grandly preposterous. But The Old Spaghetti Factory pushes the limits. Knowing something about the cost of spaghetti, I calculated the markup on my meal at 995%.

actually, I think it was this:
Chocolate Cake recipe
1/2 oz Frangelico® hazelnut liqueur
1/2 oz vodka
sugar

Add vodka and frangelico to a shaker with ice. Shake. Garnish with a
sugar-coated lemon. Shoot the drink, like you would tequila.
