FoodReporter City Guides: Little Rock, AK

This past weekend I flew into the deep south with the goal of consuming every thing of quality one city had to offer. My host, Clarkey, provided all of the necessary guidance and company. Following are some relevant places and things.

VERMILLION WATER GRILLE
* Southern pork chimichanga
* One spoonful of gumbo, black bean soup, manhattan clam chowder, and a spicy crab soup from a soup sampler that was shared
* Crabcakes on sauteed spinach
* 1/4 of an ice cream sandwich made with two enormous homeade cookies and homeade ice-cream
* 2 chocolate martinis
This restaurant is fantastic and located in the newly revitalized downtown area of the City. Full disclosure: my hosts were part owners of this restaurant. However, the food is widely considered to be excellent. A large party sitting near us were celebrating something to do with the Clinton Library.

HB's BBQ
* Chopped pork sandwich
This sandwich came wrapped in wax paper and was dripping with a sweet and smoky BBQ sauce.

DOE'S EAT PLACE
* Tamales with chilli
* Fried Shrimp
* Two Bud Lights
There are several Doe's scattered around the south with the flagship Eat Place located in Memphis. Despite being something of a chain the two Doe's I've eaten at (Fayeteville and Little Rock) have been located in dilapidated buildings that look like converted houses. On both occasions the food has been fantastic. I think Hunter S. Thompson interviewed the then Governor Bill Clinton in the Doe's in Fayetteville.

FLYING SAUCER
* One Diamond Bear
* One Oatmeal Stout
* One Other beer
* Several Jack Daniels shots
Flying Saucer is a southern chain whose schtick is having over two hundred beers on tap. One can get a swipable card to track one's progress towards drinking all over two hundred beers. Once one accomplishes this goal, a plate with one's name and rank (so far over two hundred people have reached this goal at the LR Flying Saucer) is put up on the wall. "Surely, there must be a catch," you ask. There is. You can only progress three beers towards your goal per day. No employees were able to explain this constraint. This place was great.

SIMM'S BBQ
* Pork ribs dinner (incl. baked beans and cole slaw)
* One bite of chopped pork sandwich with extra sauce
The chopped pork sandwish with extra sauce was the best thing I tasted on my trip. (A trip where a lot of great things were tasted.) The sauce at Simm's is a vinegar based sauce that, I'm told, is more typical of BBQ in the Carolinas.

TRUCK OUTSIDE OF DISCOVERY - A LITTLE ROCK GAY BAR
* Jerk chicken sandwich
This was terrible.
